Psalms 4:1-8 CEV (A psalm by David for the music leader. Use stringed instruments.) You are my God and protector. Please answer my prayer. I was in terrible distress, but you set me free. Now have pity and listen as I pray. 2. How long will you people refuse to respect me? You love foolish things, and you run after what is worthless. 3. The LORD has chosen everyone who is faithful to be his very own, and he answers my prayers. 4. But each of you had better tremble and turn from your sins. Silently search your heart as you lie in bed. 5. Offer the proper sacrifices and trust the LORD. 6. There are some who ask, "Who will be good to us?" Let your kindness, LORD, shine brightly on us. 7. You brought me more happiness than a rich harvest of grain and grapes. 8. I can lie down and sleep soundly because you, LORD, will keep me safe.
Psalms 42:1-11 CEV (A special psalm for the people of Korah and for the music leader.) As a deer gets thirsty for streams of water, I truly am thirsty for you, my God. 2. In my heart, I am thirsty for you, the living God. When will I see your face? 3. Day and night my tears are my only food, as everyone keeps asking, "Where is your God?" 4. Sorrow floods my heart, when I remember leading the worshipers to your house. I can still hear them shout their joyful praises. 5. Why am I discouraged? Why am I restless? I trust you! And I will praise you again because you help me, 6. and you are my God. I am deeply discouraged as I think about you from where the Jordan begins at Mount Hermon and from Mount Mizar. 7. Your vicious waves have swept over me like an angry ocean or a roaring waterfall. 8. Every day, you are kind, and at night you give me a song as my prayer to you, the living LORD God. 9. You are my mighty rock. Why have you forgotten me? Why must enemies mistreat me and make me sad? 10. Even my bones are in pain, while all day long my enemies sneer and ask, "Where is your God?" 11. Why am I discouraged? Why am I restless? I trust you! And I will praise you again because you help me, and you are my God.
Luke 11:1-13 CEV When Jesus had finished praying, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his followers to pray." 2. So Jesus told them, "Pray in this way: 'Father, help us to honor your name. Come and set up your kingdom. 3. Give us each day the food we need. 4. Forgive our sins, as we forgive everyone who has done wrong to us. And keep us from being tempted.' " 5. Then Jesus went on to say: Suppose one of you goes to a friend in the middle of the night and says, "Let me borrow three loaves of bread. 6. A friend of mine has dropped in, and I don't have a thing for him to eat." 7. And suppose your friend answers, "Don't bother me! The door is bolted, and my children and I are in bed. I cannot get up to give you something." 8. He may not get up and give you the bread, just because you are his friend. But he will get up and give you as much as you need, simply because you are not ashamed to keep on asking. 9. So I tell you to ask and you will receive, search and you will find, knock and the door will be opened for you. 10. Everyone who asks will receive, everyone who searches will find, and the door will be opened for everyone who knocks. 11. Which one of you fathers would give your hungry child a snake if the child asked for a fish? 12. Which one of you would give your child a scorpion if the child asked for an egg? 13. As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give the Holy Spirit to anyone who asks.
John 17:1-26 CEV After Jesus had finished speaking to his disciples, he looked up toward heaven and prayed: Father, the time has come for you to bring glory to your Son, in order that he may bring glory to you. 2. And you gave him power over all people, so that he would give eternal life to everyone you give him. 3. Eternal life is to know you, the only true God, and to know Jesus Christ, the one you sent. 4. I have brought glory to you here on earth by doing everything you gave me to do. 5. Now, Father, give me back the glory that I had with you before the world was created. 6. You have given me some followers from this world, and I have shown them what you are like. They were yours, but you gave them to me, and they have obeyed you. 7. They know that you gave me everything I have. 8. I told my followers what you told me, and they accepted it. They know that I came from you, and they believe that you are the one who sent me. 9. I am praying for them, but not for those who belong to this world. My followers belong to you, and I am praying for them. 10. All that I have is yours, and all that you have is mine, and they will bring glory to me. 11. Holy Father, I am no longer in the world. I am coming to you, but my followers are still in the world. So keep them safe by the power of the name that you have given me. Then they will be one with each other, just as you and I are one. 12. While I was with them, I kept them safe by the power you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost, except the one who had to be lost. This happened so that what the Scriptures say would come true. 13. I am on my way to you. But I say these things while I am still in the world, so that my followers will have the same complete joy that I do. 14. I have told them your message. But the people of this world hate them, because they don't belong to this world, just as I don't. 15. Father, I don't ask you to take my followers out of the world, but keep them safe from the evil one. 16. They don't belong to this world, and neither do I. 17. Your word is the truth. So let this truth make them completely yours. 18. I am sending them into the world, just as you sent me. 19. I have given myself completely for their sake, so that they may belong completely to the truth. 20. I am not praying just for these followers. I am also praying for everyone else who will have faith because of what my followers will say about me. 21. I want all of them to be one with each other, just as I am one with you and you are one with me. I also want them to be one with us. Then the people of this world will believe that you sent me. 22. I have honored my followers in the same way that you honored me, in order that they may be one with each other, just as we are one. 23. I am one with them, and you are one with me, so that they may become completely one. Then this world's people will know that you sent me. They will know that you love my followers as much as you love me. 24. Father, I want everyone you have given me to be with me, wherever I am. Then they will see the glory that you have given me, because you loved me before the world was created. 25. Good Father, the people of this world don't know you. But I know you, and my followers know that you sent me. 26. I told them what you are like, and I will tell them even more. Then the love that you have for me will become part of them, and I will be one with them.
1 John 5:14-15 CEV We are certain that God will hear our prayers when we ask for what pleases him. 15. And if we know that God listens when we pray, we are sure that our prayers have already been answered.
